Indoor Plants that Improve Air Quality and Mood

Indoor plants do more than just look pretty!

It's a well-known fact that when we breathe, inhaling brings in oxygen and exhaling pushes out carbon dioxide. Another widely known bit of information is that plants do the opposite; they absorb CO2 then release oxygen, which is a pretty amazing thing that we definitely appreciate. However, did you know that when photosynthesis stops at night, most of those plants do the opposite and absorb the oxygen while releasing CO2?

But, as per usual, there are a few very special ones that switch it up and take in CO2 and even release oxygen in the p.m. hours. Now, that means that these plants, when kept in the house, help to keep the oxygen flowing all throughout the day. Not only do they promote healthy breathing in your home, they also improve the air quality by absorbing toxic chemicals like benzene and formaldehyde. As for simply being with nature, it can help improve concentration, productivity and, according to a study by the University of Michigan, they can help increase memory retention.

So, in light of that, here are a few suggestions for indoor plants that may just make you a bit happier.

Succulents are easy to take care of and are amazing natural air purifiers that help to release moisture and improve the humidity in your home. They also increase the air quality in the evening time, making them great to keep the air fresh all day.

Aloe Vera is from the succulent family and also helps in conserving energy during the day and release oxygen at night. It is a fleshy, short stemmed plant that filters pollutants from your home and can also be a physical remedy for burns or rashes.

Bamboo filters toxins and restores moisture to the air- so, they're like natural humidifiers. They can grow to be quite tall or can be compact and sit in your living room, giving off fresh vibes that help you breathe better.

Golden Pathos are creeper plants (vines) and are very sturdy, so, they are great for those who don’t have much of a green thumb. This vine plant will absorb and purify your inside air of toxins and exhaust fumes.

Jasmine shrubs and flowers release a very calming fragrance at night and researchers have found that it also helps to boost GABA, which is a chemical on nerve cells that improves mood, promotes rest and reduces anxiety.

Lavender's essence in itself will induce sleep and its soothing aroma is known to calm anxiety. The lovely plant is also excellent in promoting blood circulation and is helpful in purifying the air by lessening carbon dioxide levels and unpleasant scents.

These seven indoor plants are beautiful to liven up your homes and to give you a refreshing breather. Life can be stressful and it can be very frustrating in many aspects; however, why not try an indoor plant to lift your mood and help you have a rest better?
